A recent article in YorkRegion.com highlighted a motion brought forward by my colleague Councillor Scott Crone, which I was proud to second, encouraging East Gwillimbury to lead by example in flying the Canadian flag proudly ahead of Canada Day. I want to take a moment to share why this initiative matters — and why it’s more than just a symbolic gesture.
As a municipality, we have a responsibility not just to manage services, but to help shape the identity and spirit of our community. Flying the flag is a simple yet powerful reminder of the values we share — unity, freedom, inclusion, and pride in being Canadian. In times of global uncertainty, it's even more important for us to stand tall in who we are.
This motion, led by Councillor Crone, was about municipal leadership — and setting the tone for our residents. When our civic buildings raise the flag, it sends a message of solidarity and pride. But the real momentum comes when residents, businesses, and community organizations follow suit. Together, we can create a visible and meaningful display of national pride throughout East Gwillimbury.
Some may see this as just a feel-good moment — but I see it as a powerful invitation. Let’s invite one another to be proud of where we live and who we are. Let’s encourage conversations about what the flag means, and let’s make it visible in our front yards, storefronts, and gathering spaces.
I thank Councillor Crone for putting this forward and my fellow Council members for supporting it. I also want to thank the many residents who have already expressed their support. If you're able, I encourage you to fly the flag — not just for Canada Day, but as a statement of the values that unite us all.
East Gwillimbury leads — and this is one small but powerful way to show it.
